PURPOSE

The purpose of this activity is to encourage the child to memorize the names of objects. This game must be done in a playtime atmosphere. There asould be no pressure on the child to remember the names of all the items. This activity is designed to assist the child in developing a memorizing process for the child. Whether the process includes shapes, colors, names, etc. is not important for, the child will work out a system. If the child has great difficulty with this activity, you may wish to show him/her how to remember the items (positions, alphabetical order, shape, color, size, etc.). You may wish to start with a few items and work up to several. You can use items from the kitchen, playroom, junk drawer, etc., as groups that may help the child.

PROCESS

1. Select a few items of similar size from around the house and place them on the tray.

2. Ask the child to look at them and see if he/she can remember them if they are covered up. This makes the child put a little extra effort into trying to remember.

3. If the child does not know the name of an item, tell them what it is.

4. After the child has had sufficient time to view the objects, cover them up.

5. Ask the child to tell you the names of the items under the cover.

6. Let the child think.

7. After a reasonable period of time, if the child doesn't get all the items, uncover them and try again.

8. As the child gets better at this activity, place more and/or smaller items on the tray.

9. It is important that the parent have a great deal of patience with the child during this activity. Children will not remember the same way an adult does. In other words, the child is simply learning how to remember with all the complexities that it brings.

10. Have the child pick some items for you to remember.
